KOSMOS SPA(CE) | 2020 | Downtown Nevada City, CA | Remodel
This 1910 building was once a residential dwelling. Over the years it has taken many forms. Here we converted what had most recently been a sandwich bistro into a cafe and organic spa. The former office and a portion of the indoor seating area were converted into spa treatment rooms, and the front counter was reformed and updated to match the eclectic aesthetic of the new owner, Kosmos Spa(ce). Looking to convey the feeling of a witch's house on the corner, the exterior was painted a dark blue with black trim. Several rounds of planning commision applications and city council appeals were presented in order to gain approval to paint the white picket fence black to match. A moroccan inspired cement tile was used throughout the front service area, paired with a maple butcher block waterfall counter, and green colored marmoleum flooring.
