SUNSET PARK POOL PAVILIONS | 2014| Brooklyn, NY | New Construction

Jo Garst Design, in collaboration with the Parsons School of Design, designed and built a pair of changing room and locker pavilions at the historic 1936 Sunset Park Pool. Partnering with the New York City Parks Department, we helped to coordinate Landmark Commission approval for this modern addition to a prized historic institution. The pavilions pay homage to the existing recreation center, of the same era, by mimicking the rhythm of the building’s windows. The polycarbonate roof allowed for maximum daylighting, eliminating the need of any supplemental electric lighting. The experience of physically constructing in real life a conceptual design, drafted only in two dimensions, was a humbling one; and one that we take into every one of our projects moving forward. Architects should know how a building is actually constructed, and we learned those lessons early on.
